The Gazette’s publisher garnered regional recognition Friday night.

Lucy Talley received the Honorary Life Membership award from the Mid-Atlantic Newspaper Advertising and Marketing Executives.

Talley is regional vice president for the South Atlantic region for GateHouse Media. She oversees operations at The Gazette, The Star and multiple newspapers in Tennessee, and North and South Carolina.

She was recognized by an organization which promotes education, the importance of newspapers in the community and relationships among newspaper advertising associates.

Talley came to Gastonia two years ago, bringing with her more than 30 years of experience in the newspaper business.

“This has been the most humbling experience of my professional career. I appreciate all who thought I was worthy of this recognition. I am proud of our industry and to share this award with past winners – many of whom I know personally and call friends,” Talley said.

Gazette and Star Advertising Director Konrad La Prade said it was no surprise to hear that his boss was recognized for encouraging success and fostering teamwork.

“Lucy is, without question, one of the best people I’ve ever worked for. She is equally full of ideas and willing to listen to her people,” he said. “She constantly moves obstacles out of the way of her team while inspiring her people to excel.”

The Mid-Atlantic Newspaper Advertising and Marketing Executives is an association with membership in Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia.

The association has awarded 55 Honorary Life Memberships, and Talley’s makes the 56th.

Talley received the award Friday night at the group’s annual conference in Winston-Salem.

She is a member of the association and served as director and officer in 2003-2004.

Under her leadership, the newspapers Talley heads have won numerous state and regional awards.

“Lucy is my kind of publisher,” said Hunter Bretzius, executive editor of The Gazette and The Star. “She’s there when you need her to support the newsroom but never in the way of daily operation. She never wavers in her commitment to the role news and news gathering plays in the newspaper as a whole. She’s funny, she’s strong, she’s smart. If I’m ever in a foxhole, I hope Lucy is there to share it,”

Keith Raffone, general manager of The Gazette and The Star, lauded Talley’s hard work and compassion.

“Over my career I have had the pleasure of working with really good people and some great ones as well. Lucy is one of those great ones,” he said. “She understands the complexity of the issues we all deal with and facilitates solutions that are strong yet compassionate. Working for her I can say I never worked harder or had more fun doing it.”
